ToggleCommemorating Veterans Day: Honoring Our Heroes and Their Families
Understanding Veterans Day
Veterans Day, observed annually on November 11th, is a time to honor and thank those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Unlike Memorial Day, which remembers those who died while in service, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or deceased—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime. This federal holiday was originally known as Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I. In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the U.S. Congress, at the urging of the veterans’ service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans.” From then on, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
Recent Celebrations and Honors
Each year, various events and ceremonies are held across the country to celebrate Veterans Day. For instance, in a recent commemoration, Governor Wes Moore and Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller of Maryland honored Veterans Day and military families with profound gratitude. Governor Moore, a combat veteran himself, has expressed a deep understanding of the sacrifices made by those in the military and their families. This type of recognition from state leadership is a critical aspect of Veterans Day celebrations, highlighting the importance of both veterans and their families in the fabric of our society.
The observance often includes parades, church services, and other community events designed to offer thanks and support. Schools and organizations also participate by educating the public about the history of Veterans Day and the stories of veterans, ensuring that the sacrifices of our servicemen and women are not forgotten. These events serve as a reminder of the bravery and selflessness of our nation’s veterans and are a crucial way for communities to come together in appreciation and respect.
Supporting Veterans Beyond Veterans Day
While it is essential to honor veterans on Veterans Day, support for veterans should extend beyond just one day a year. Various programs and initiatives are in place to assist veterans with healthcare, education, employment, and other needs. For example, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides numerous services to veterans, including health care services, benefit programs, and resources for homeless veterans.
Furthermore, many non-profit organizations and community groups are dedicated to supporting veterans and their families year-round. These organizations provide essential services such as counseling, career services, and financial assistance. It is crucial for communities and individuals to recognize the ongoing needs of veterans and to actively participate in supporting them throughout the year. Whether it’s through volunteering, donating, or simply expressing thanks, every gesture counts towards ensuring that veterans and their sacrifices are always remembered and honored.
