Understanding Veterans Day

Veterans Day, observed annually on November 11th, is a time to honor and thank those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Unlike Memorial Day, which remembers those who died while in service, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or deceased—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime. This federal holiday was originally known as Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I. In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the U.S. Congress, at the urging of the veterans’ service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans.” From then on, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
